What is my Harley-Davidson worth? Values by model and why they hold

Harley-Davidson is the single largest slice of the US used motorcycle market and the one with the most predictable values, because the buyers are so consistent about what they want.

The curve

A Harley touring bike retains roughly 80% of MSRP after year one and about 60% after five years — the best retention of any category. Softails run a few points behind. Sportsters retain a lower percentage of a lower price, which makes them the cheap way in and the hardest to lose money on in absolute terms.

Touring

Street Glide, Road Glide, Road King, Ultra Limited. This is the market. A five-year-old Street Glide with typical miles (20–25,000) is worth about $17,000–19,000 private party against a $27,000 sticker. Special and ST versions carry a premium; CVOs carry a large one but depreciate faster from a much higher price. The Milwaukee-Eight (2017 on) is worth meaningfully more than the Twin Cam it replaced.

Softail

Fat Boy, Heritage, Breakout, Low Rider S, Street Bob. The 2018 redesign (the "Softail" that absorbed the Dyna line) is a clean break in values: 2018-and-later bikes hold value like touring bikes; 2017-and-earlier Softails and Dynas are cheaper and have a loyal following that keeps clean examples firm.

Sportster

Iron 883, Forty-Eight, 1200 Custom, and the Revolution Max Sportster S and Nightster from 2021–22. The Evo Sportsters ended in 2022 and are the most plentiful used Harleys in the country; a good Iron 883 is $5,500–7,500 almost regardless of year. The new liquid-cooled bikes depreciated hard from MSRP and are a used bargain.

What moves a Harley's value

• Stage upgrades with receipts: neutral to slightly positive, unlike most modifications.
• Loud pipes without the original exhaust: slightly negative; the buyer has to buy the stock pipes back for resale.
• Chrome, bags and windshields: neutral. Buyers expect them.
• Custom paint: negative unless it is exceptional. It narrows the buyer pool.
• Extended warranty (ESP) that transfers: positive, a few hundred dollars.
