Selling privately vs trading in your motorcycle: the real math

The private-party premium, the sales tax credit, and how to decide which way to sell a motorcycle in your state.

Private sale pays more. Trade-in is easier. The interesting question is how much more and how much easier, because the answer changes with the bike's value and the state you live in.

The gap

A dealer's trade-in offer is typically 70–80% of the bike's private party value. On a $10,000 bike that is $2,000–3,000 left on the table. That is the case for selling privately, and for cheap bikes it usually wins.

The tax credit

In most states, when you trade in you pay sales tax on the new bike only on the difference after the trade. Trade a $10,000 bike against a $20,000 one in a 7% state and you save $700. The credit does not exist in a handful of states (California, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Oregon, Virginia among them — check yours) and there is no tax to save on a private sale in states with none.

The cost of a private sale

Photographs, a listing, two to four weeks in season, lowballers, no-shows, test-ride liability, meeting at a bank, and the title paperwork. Call it ten hours and some risk. If your time is worth something, it is worth something here too.

A rule of thumb

  • Bike worth under $5,000: sell privately. The dealer's offer will be insulting and the tax credit is small.
  • $5,000–12,000: it depends on the tax credit and how much you hate the process. Ask for dealer offers first — dealers competing sight-unseen usually beat a walk-in trade.
  • Over $12,000, buying new: trade in, unless you have a rare model with enthusiast demand. The tax credit plus the time saved closes most of the gap.

The third option

Value the bike here, then ask for offers. Up to three dealers who buy in your area see the bike's details and the value, and contact you with an offer. It takes one click and costs nothing. Offers tend to land between trade-in and private party, and you can decline all of them.
