Salvage and rebuilt title motorcycle value: what the brand costs you

A branded title is the largest single deduction in motorcycle valuation, and the one sellers most often hope will not matter. It does.

Salvage vs rebuilt

A salvage title means an insurer declared the bike a total loss — usually because repair cost exceeded a threshold of its value, not because it was destroyed. A rebuilt (or "reconstructed", "restored", "prior salvage" depending on the state) title means a salvage bike was repaired and passed a state inspection and can be registered and ridden again. Most branded bikes on the road are rebuilt.

What it costs

• Rebuilt title: 30–45% below the clean-title value for the same bike, mileage and condition. Closer to 30% on cheap, common bikes; closer to 45% on expensive ones where the buyer has more to lose.
• Salvage title (not yet rebuilt): a parts-and-project price, often 25–35% of clean value, because the buyer has to do the repair and pass inspection.

Why the discount is so large

Three reasons. Buyers cannot see what was repaired or how well. Lenders will not finance it, which removes every buyer who needs a loan. And insurers may only write liability, which removes many of the rest. What is left is a small pool of cash buyers who know the risk and price it in.

Dealers

Most franchised dealers will not take a branded bike in trade at any price, because they cannot retail it and their wholesale outlets discount it heavily. Some independents will, at the salvage-level price. Our valuation asks about title status up front so the trade-in figure is honest rather than a number a dealer will laugh at.

Selling a rebuilt bike well

Disclose it in the first line of the listing — not doing so is fraud in most states and buyers find out at the DMV. Then document the repair: photos of the damage, the receipts, the inspection certificate. A rebuilt bike with a documented, competent repair sells near the top of the branded range. One with a vague story sells at the bottom or not at all.
